Cleaning: All clothing sold by Circa Vintage has been dry cleaned or hand washed and pressed. Circa Vintage advises all our clients to use a good Dry cleaners who are used to dealing with Vintage or quality items due to the clothing ages there are no fabric content labels or cleaning instructions.
NEVER hand wash vintage, crepe, silk or rayon jersey, printed fabrics or sequins (due to colour run and/or shrinkage)
Ironing: Cottons may be ironed on the outside, all other garments should be steamed or pressed on the INSIDE with due care, especially at the hem or where there are darts otherwise a good dry cleaners can always press a garment for you without it being cleaned.
Seamstress: Circa Vintage always recommends to all their clients to find a good seamstress who lives near by to you, as sometimes a vintage piece of clothing may need a little alteration to fit you.
Clothes from the past were normally made to measure or made to the silhouettes of the era.
e.g. In the 1950’s the underwear was sculpted to created a fuller bust and tiny high waist, which is not the body shape of today’s women, so a good seamstress can work wonders on your favourite vintage pieces so you can wear them today. Also a good Lingerie shop would help.
The fit: a dress may need to be fitted to your figure and made smaller or made slightly larger with excess seam allowance on the inside of the dress or let out at the zip or even an insert. Once this is done you’ll feel like a million dollars as no one else will be wearing the same item.
Zips: vintage zips are metal and sometimes you may wish to replace them for a new concealed zip. Dresses from the 1920’s to 1940’s have poppers fastenings and again you may prefer a zip as poppers can gape or pop open.
Hem: Due to your height you may prefer a hemline to be shorter or add a split to the back or side to give a more flattering balance with your figure.
Neck line: Vintage necklines can some times come up quite high and a seamstress can lower the height or re-shape the line to flatter you and make the piece more wearable for today.
