Classically A-line tailored from cream wool with a bold tonal running stitch which edges the wide, notched lapels of the collar. The gold and silver-toned buttons are ornamental and the coat closes with large, covered popper fastenings. There are three smaller gold and silver buttons at each sleeve. The detachable silver-tone chain belt adds a playful, futuristic detail typical of late 1960s design and composed of three chains secured with a round polished buckle. There are in-seam slit pockets at the front and a vent at the rear hem. Lined in a fine quality rayon, this elegant coat is in fine vintage condition with virtually no signs of wear noted and no faults. A superb example of high-end space age fashion of the era and will fit sizes up to a UK 10 or US 6 best.

MEASUREMENTS FLAT:

BUST: 38in ( 96.5 cm )
WAIST: 32in ( 81 cm )
HIP: 41in ( 104 cm )
LENGTH: 49in ( 102 cm )
SHOULDERS: 16 in (40.5 cm)
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0398/5978/1798/files/1970s-Cardin-esque-Cream-Wool-Double-Breasted-Coat-Front.jpg?v=1703263408
1971-pierre-cardin-documented-couture-green-linen-dress-with-shorts
1971 Pierre Cardin Documented Couture Green Linen Dress with Shorts

This is an extremely rare piece of early Pierre Cardin couture. Crafted for the French fashion house's Spring 1971 collection, we were lucky enough to find these editorial shots from that year which showcase the ensemble beautifully. Pierre Cardin was a true renaissance man whose empire spanned fashion, furniture and beverages. Beloved by fashion fanatics for his futuristic, avant-garde designs, this two-piece set plays to the designer’s strengths. Composed of a sleeveless tunic dress and high-waisted shorts, it is crafted from vibrant pistachio green linen. The tunic is detailed with white piping around the hems and across its single patch pocket. It has a slit on the left hand side which runs the length of the body, from bottom hem to under the arm, and is secured with chunky green spherical buttons and fabric loops. The dress is lined with tonal green satin. The shorts are cut to a very mini length and are detailed with white piping around the legs. They fasten with a hidden zip at the rear and are unlined. The ensemble's label reads “Creation Pierre Cardin Paris”.

Both pieces are in excellent archival vintage condition and display very well - no issues to report. The fabric has no stretch and there are no size or composition labels. We believe these pieces would best fit a size UK 6-8, US 2-4. Our model's sizes are: Bust: 33" (84cm), Waist: 26" (66cm), Hips: 34" (86cm) and Height: 5' 7" (170cm). We have attached a photo from the Fédération de la Haute couture et de la mode with the same neckerchief design in a double breasted version. The photo is not date attributed but suggests this may have been from his debut collection.

Cut to an elegant, elongated silhouette, it has a softly curved waist. The jacket’s long sleeves are anchored by substantial padded, doughnut-shaped cuffs, an unmistakable nod to Cardin’s cosmic aesthetic, echoing the circular motifs and architectural volumes that defined his space-age collections which were to come in the following decade. The collarless neckline is kept deliberately clean, offset by a small quilted, curved bouclé shawl attached at the back of the neck, which wraps around to tie at the front. The jacket fastens with knotted braid buttons in slightly different shade of purple, more of a grape colour, and is lined in aubergine and black silk. The matching skirt is a refined pencil silhouette with a wide waistband and two gentle pleats at the front to allow ease of movement. Fully lined in aubergine silk satin, it fastens at the back with a concealed tonal zip and hook-and-eye.

This rare ensemble is in excellent archival vintage condition with no issues of any note - it does not appear to have been altered. After early work with Christian Dior, he established a signature style built on geometric silhouettes, bubble dresses, circular cut-outs, and innovative synthetic fabrics. His designs rejected romanticism in favour of clean lines and sculptural structure, reflecting the era’s fascination with technology and space exploration. Cardin’s work was worn by cultural icons including The Beatles, Mia Farrow, and Jeanne Moreau, reinforcing his status at the forefront of avant-garde style. Beyond design, he was a pioneer of global licensing, transforming the commercial landscape of fashion.

MEASUREMENTS JACKET

BUST - 36 in.
