1950s pale yellow cotton ruched dress by Bijou Original which was featured in Vanity Fair magazine in 1958. This is an unusual sun dress from a high-quality British label which produced fashionable clothing from the 1950s – 1970s. The dress is almost entirely fashioned from neatly stitched rows of alternate wide and narrow ruched bands. It has a typical sundress balconette style bodice with double spaghetti straps. The wide flared skirt is a double thickness with the external layer a crisp cotton and the lining in a softer muslin type fabric. The dress fastens to the side with the original metal zip that has also been painted yellow – a feature assigned to better quality garments. The flared skirt is photographed without a petticoat but one could easily be added. In wonderful vintage condition for a dress approaching 70 years old. If we are being very picky, we can see that the straps have been shortened; however, all four retain the original length and could easily be altered back to full length or to suit. The dress is quite petite and this is a best fit for a UK size 6-8, US 2-4 as seen here on our model.
