ARCHIVE - 1960s James Galanos Couture Yellow Silk and Gold Embroidered Overcoat

£0.00 Sold out

This magnificent 1960s or early 1970s haute couture overcoat by celebrated Beverly Hills designer James Galanos is in immaculate vintage condition. The piece is of notably heavy embossed silk linen fabric in golden yellow, embroidered entirely with gold lame thread polkadots and double lined in ochre toned raw silk. Skilfully tailored to synch at the waist and flare out dramatically from the hip and shoulders, this statement piece is floor sweeping and the weight of the fabric ensures that the sculptural shape of the garment is retained when walking. There is a double breasted button stand hosting two rows of 8 gold tone gilt round buttons with a floral motif (16 in total) and a concealed pocket at either side of the stand, just below the waistline. The fabric on the collar is doubled over and the density of the material elevates it slightly, adding to the overall drama of the piece. The reverse of the garment is sculpted by a soft inwards facing pleat that descends from a point at the centre mid back and runs the length of the piece opening out at is nears the floor. There are no notable flaws bar some very mild tearing of the lining beneath each arm (not visible when worn). A truly spectacular piece of couture and is of museum level quality for the serious collector. It is worthy of note that irrespective of the generosity of fabric in the waist and hip, the bust measurement is very slight measuring at 15" across the front of the bust. Therefore we recommend that it would best suit US size 0 - 2, UK size 4-6.

Bust - 30" (76cms)

F.A.Q.

Will you set anything aside for me before I come?

We are happy to find anything you may be interested in from our website - please let us know a week in advance.

We also have an extensive offline collection. If you let us know your size, style, favourite colour to wear and perhaps your budget, we can browse through our archive in advance of your appointment.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Clients may wish to bring modern shapewear when trying on garments from certain eras, especially the 1950s. Vintage clothing was often worn with undergarments that shaped the waist and as such is tailored for them.

We have a huge variety of slip dresses and petticoats to complete your look; many of which are also for sale.

You may also wish to bring your favourite footwear. We often find a classic pair of nude shoes work well when trying on, or a pair in gold or silver.

Do you have a price range?

Many of our lower-priced pieces (under £150) are not available to buy online. Our prices range from £80 - £600 for separates. Dresses start at around £150 and go up to £2,500 for the very best antique pieces and designer vintage. Our bridalwear ranges from £300 - £3,000.

Can I bring anyone with me?

Yes but please do let us know the size of your party in advance.

Where can I get alterations?
