This is a very pretty original 1950s cotton dress in a toile de Jouy repeat print of rural idylls and pastoral scenes which have been popular throughout Europe but especially England and France since the 17th Century. This particular blue and white print portrays an 18th Century couple walking over a bridge and scenes of castles or abbey ruins. The dress appears to be a very skilled homemade or dressmaker piece with exceptional detail. It has delightful cap sleeves, a square neckline, a fitted balconette bust with ruffle detail and princess seams to promote a gentle flare in the skirt. The skirt has a deep gathered flounce along the bottom hem and the dress fastens to the back with the original metal zipper. In excellent vintage condition with no faults of any note. It would fit up to a US size 4, UK size 8.
