ARCHIVE - 1950s Christian Dior Demi Couture Gold Silk Evening Dress and Shawl

£0.00 Sold out

This arresting Christian Dior 1950s silk evening dress showcases some incredibly skilful construction and exudes timeless glamour. The fabric is luxurious textured silk in pale gold and has been artfully tailored to create the designer's magnificent trademark 'New Look' silhouette. Forward folding pleats on either side of the gown have been tailored at the bodice to form a gorgeous fan shaped bodice. The same pleats continue down the length of the dress and are stitched over the navel before opening out into the flared ankle length skirt with an impressive forwards thrusting dynamic. The reverse of the skirt features a single inwards facing pleat that lifts the dress over the buttock to flattering effect, accentuating the feminine waistline. The bodice is cut horizontally across the breast, with half moon shaped panels on either side to protect modesty. The over shoulder straps are 2 inches thick and of the same silk fabric. A key feature of this extraordinary piece is the accompanying shawl which can be detached if desired. Ruching at the front on either side creates a dramatic sculpted effect so that the shawl stands away from the shoulders at the front. Large round buttons encrusted with Swarovski crystals affix the shawl on either side of the bodice. The piece is consolidated with a central seam that runs the length of the front. There is a central zip fastening at the reverse. This exceptional piece is in overall excellent vintage condition; however, it should be noted that there are some very pale watermarks on the lower part of the skirt at the front, and some minute damage to the fabric on the inside hem that is not visible when worn. We also believe that the dress may have been altered as the hem has been taken up at some point. That said, the workmanship matches the skill with which the garment was manufactured. Priced accordingly and still a truly remarkable piece which would be an excellent alternative bridal dress. Would best suit US size 2 - 4, UK size 6 - 8.

F.A.Q.

Will you set anything aside for me before I come?

We are happy to find anything you may be interested in from our website - please let us know a week in advance.

We also have an extensive offline collection. If you let us know your size, style, favourite colour to wear and perhaps your budget, we can browse through our archive in advance of your appointment.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Clients may wish to bring modern shapewear when trying on garments from certain eras, especially the 1950s. Vintage clothing was often worn with undergarments that shaped the waist and as such is tailored for them.

We have a huge variety of slip dresses and petticoats to complete your look; many of which are also for sale.

You may also wish to bring your favourite footwear. We often find a classic pair of nude shoes work well when trying on, or a pair in gold or silver.

Do you have a price range?

Many of our lower-priced pieces (under £150) are not available to buy online. Our prices range from £80 - £600 for separates. Dresses start at around £150 and go up to £2,500 for the very best antique pieces and designer vintage. Our bridalwear ranges from £300 - £3,000.

Can I bring anyone with me?
