The luxurious deep red satin overlay has an unusual butterfly wing print and is beautifully tailored to ensure drama and movement when worn. The sweetheart shaped neckline is supported by 1 inch straps in matching fabric, with flattering sunburst pleats and a diagonal bow at the centre front. The overlay fabric is gathered into neat pleats at the front of the dress graduating from a single point beneath the bow and are stitched to the bodice as they gradually extend outwards, eventually softening into the line of the skirt. The mid-calf length skirt has a generous underlay of silk taffeta in olive green, reinforced with netting to create volume, whereby by the overlay is masterfully arranged into a wrap-around effect . An inward facing pleat falling from the centre reverse just below the waistline enhances the shape of the skirt with a modest tail. The manner in which the fabric has been sculpted and fashioned to create this alluring silhouette is something special. In excellent condition, this garment is petite and would best suit up to US size 2-4, UK size 6-8. The soft gold metallic fabric is beautifully tailored in the bodice with batwing style sleeves curving in towards a petit and tidy waistline. The open neckline has a notched blouse collar and falls easily into a deep V above the central button stand. There are 11 x fabric covered buttons which run from the centre bust to the navel and rest above concealed popper fastenings to secure. The line of the skirt flares slightly from the hip and finishes at the knee. There is a belt in matching gold lame which secures at the front with a hook and eye fastening embellished with oversize statement buttons. The sleeves are a notable feature, gathered below a wick that spans the chest broadening the shoulders and styled into a drop shape with a slit window to expose the upper arm. There is a small zip fastening to the left of the waist this is a modern replacement but has been inserted well. The aesthetic is playful yet assertive and is guaranteed to turn heads. This charming piece is designed for a petite figure and would best suit US size 0-2, UK size 4-6. Condition wise, this dress is very good overall. As with many antique lame pieces, tarnish should be expected; however, this is contained to just the rear neck area and has not changed the gold colour to any notable degree. The company created desirable pieces in a host of innovative Liberty designed prints and were one of the first brands to openly collaborate with other designer brands such as Heals and Harris Tweed. The bodice is a crepe wool teal colour and has navy crocheted flowers on the front panelling with a high neck collar. The sleeves are made from a thick cotton with a stylised paisley design in blues, greens, purples and turquoises coordinating very well with the bodice. The design of the sleeves is echoed in the full length skirt with its ruffle hem that is embellished further with the same navy crocheted ribbon. The sleeves have elasticated cuffs. These Chinese skirt styles or mamianqun are often called aprons and are typically comprised of two identical sections, this one having an elaborate embroidered decorated panel on pink silk, a white brocade side panel and a honeycomb pleated or gored panel. Only Han women wore these skirts, not the Manchu women of the ruling Qing dynasty. They were worn overlapping, wrapped around the body and secured through fabric loops and knotted buttons. The two sections are attached to a wide plain waistband, most likely made of cotton or hemp. On formal occasions, Han women wore a half-length jacket accompanied by trousers and paired with a panel skirt or apron. Panels were only embroidered to where the jacket reached the skirt and Han working women often wore trousers without skirts, as did unmarried women. We’ve attached a hand-coloured photograph to show how the garment would have been worn – circa 1900.

The embroidered panels and contracting trims depict flowers, fruits, and butterflies all of which represent auspicious symbols and good luck charms. The flowers represent every season: the lotus in summer, the chrysanthemum in autumn, the plum in winter, and the peony in spring. The butterfly was known as the Chinese Cupid. The birds depicted include the crane, a symbol of longevity; the pheasant, a symbol of wealth and good wishes; and mandarin ducks, a symbol of marital happiness. This is a very beautiful and elaborate example which was almost certainly made for a bride in the latter part of the Qing Dynasty. Condition is absolutely extraordinary, and it has been very carefully preserved. Both panels are remarkably fresh and without damage, thinning or any age markings. Worthy of museum acquisition or for a Chinese costume or textile collector. This antique piece features wide lame ribbon straps in shimmering silver. Intricate cobweb lame mimics the appearance of lace, with flowers, shell motifs and geometric shapes woven throughout. The top layer is sheer and the dress is lined with champagne silk with hook-and-eye closures at the rear. The bottom layer forms a pair of culottes. Very unusual for a piece of this time, these shorts are tailored and flared to a relaxed fit that means they could be mistaken for a midi-skirt. Falling delicately over the top of these, layers of petals form a skirt and create a scallop-like effect.

A century old, it is rare that a piece of this delicacy survives. No labels are left in the dress but she has been very well manufactured. Please note that we have expertly repaired some of the breaks in the dress torso since she was photographed so refer to the model shots as these better reflect the condition. Overall, the dress is very good for her age and she can be worn with care. The lining is original and in excellent condition with no stains or holes - quite remarkable. The straps are a well matched replacement and could be quite modern. The silver lame is good to very good overall and without tarnish; the colour has mellowed over the years and the silk mesh interwoven with the lame threads has darkened allover. There a number of areas where this element of the fabric is splitting but due to the extraordinary design of the lame this isn't noticed when worn - large areas of the lame are excellent. It's painstaking work but the mesh could be backed to strengthen through conservation or replaced. We're comfortable with the level of preservation and effort we have put in to get her wearable or for display purposes but anymore than this should be decided by her future owner. She can certainly be enjoyed just as she is.

The dress is very petite and would best fit a UK 4-6 or US 2, but please double-check the measurements below. Our model (5ft 4in / 163cm) is a UK 6 or US 2 and this was a tight fit. He chose the name Jean Varon in order to appear to be French and also because it meant he was the only designer under the letter 'V' in the rag trade book. In 1965, he designed outfits in Op Art prints for Diana Rigg for her role as Emma Peel in The Avengers. The elegant cuffs are split and are fastened with two small purple plastic buttons, again detailed with the Dior logo. This jacket is lined throughout with a purple silk-blend satin woven with the Dior brand name in a blown-up script.

This jacket style was a fixture in the collection with the design being featured in several Looks, each a slight variation on a theme including fabrics used and differences in length. It is 50% Wool, 50% Acrylic and the lining is 80% Viscose, 20% Silk. The tulle and trim are both 100% Silk. The fabric has no stretch. Staged in a former 19th-century church, the show unfolded like a glittering ritual, with models in slashed, sheer, and intricately beaded gowns that celebrated the body. The presentation arrived amid renewed buzz around Macdonald’s work, fueled in part by Gigi Hadid’s headline-making appearance in one of his barely-there beaded jumpsuits at a Sports Illustrated event. This was the show that revitalised Macdonald’s place at the center of the red-carpet conversation.

Walking the runway as look 31/57, this dress was a glittering disco-ball in a collection that was monochrome in the majority. Tailored from a fine mesh in a pale nude hue, it has a body-con silhouette with an intricately crafted cage top. The dress is elaborately sequinned all-over with large rectangular paillettes in a champagne hue that look silver or gold depending on how the light hits. Up close, the embellishment is incredibly detailed. The paillettes are all individually stitched at each end with a tonal thread onto the mesh. At the rear, the cage top gives way to two chunky embellished straps which meet in the middle of the back. The strap which forms a choker at the neck crosses the back straps and is secured under the arm with hook-and-eye clasps. The dress is unlined. It fastens at the centre of the back with an exposed gold-tone zip and chunky gold-tone zip-pull.

This dress is in very good archival vintage condition and is the actual show piece from the runway. This is the classic Ossie design that has made him one of the most enduring and admired fashion designers of the 20th century. It is fully labelled and from one of Ossie's early and costly mainline collections - they are much rarer than Radley retailed pieces.

The suit is fashioned from cream moss crepe, a crinkly, tactile fabric with a moss-like texture known for its flexibility when draped. It was a signature cloth of the label. The jacket is tailored to a V-neck, button-down style, where it closes with pink satin-covered buttons. A detachable wide pink satin belt finishes the waist. The neckline is detailed with pale pink satin with a pretty scallop hemline. The trousers have a very high waist cut and a wide silhouette that flares out towards the floor. They are fastened at the back with a hidden tonal zip and hook-and-eye clasp. Both the jacket and trousers are unlined. We have attached archival photos of identical Ossie trouser suits from the same period made from his signature moss crepe.

This two-piece ensemble is in very good vintage condition, bordering on excellent overall. We have sold many outstanding Ossie Clark examples over the years including this suit - twice. His pieces were often worn to death and altered but we see no evidence of that here and it has been well looked after. We have expertly cleaned the ensemble and the fabric is fresh looking with no visible mends. We have tried our best to remove some halo staining under the arms and whilst it has faded considerably from when we acquired the ensemble - some very faint marks remain. There are a few pin pricks on the right satin lapel which were very difficult to photograph and shown here. Labelled a size UK 14, this is better suited in modern sizing to no bigger than a UK 6 or US 2 with a tiny waist as Ossie Clark trousers are notoriously slim fitting. The fabric is labelled “moss crepe” which is 100% Polyester. It has the smallest amount of stretch.

Notes on Designer: Ossie Clark was a highly influential British fashion designer in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1965 he graduated from the Royal College of Art with a first class degree and immediately began selling his work in exclusive London boutiques including Alice Pollock’s Quorum. Here he created a collection with textile designer and soon to be wife Celia Birtwell, one of the most famous collaborations in fashion history. Quorum was bought by Radley in the late 1960s which led to the ‘Ossie Clark for Radley’ label. Today, his distinctive dresses are highly sought after and admired by celebrities such as Kate Moss and Emma Watson.

MEASUREMENTS TOP

BUST - 36 in. The cape was styled over a high-cut bodysuit, where it billowed behind the model like a pair of ethereal butterfly wings.

Expertly crafted from lightweight, semi-sheer silk crepe, the cape features beautifully graduated horizontal panels that fade from deep black into a soft peach-blush pink.
