All stones are claw set into a rhodium plated silver base metal. This piece is a classic princess shape and length and designed for more formal attire. This dress is a superbly tailored shift style with a scoop neckline that sits quite high up sweeping the collar bone; very Holly Golightly and immortalised by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1961. This dress is probably from the same period or a few seasons later. The wool crepe is of extremely fine quality and there is a pleasing weight to the fabric. The dress is silk lined and there is a generous seam allowance too. Much of the dress has been constructed by hand. It fastens with a zip at the centre back and there is a decorative tie on the bust-line seam at the back as well as one covered button to fasten the top. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOverall, the condition is vintage excellent. There is one small area of thinning on the front, possibly moth damage which is very small and not immediately noticeable on inspection. This could be invisibly mended. I would normally have this restoration carried out but this is archival quality and the new owner may wish to instruct these works themselves. The dress is a classic front-fastening shirtwaister design with wide lapel collar and three buttons leading down to the wide waistband. This middle portion of the dress does up with three hook and eyes while the skirt portion of the dress is comprised of neat box pleats and a slightly flared design. The last button is placed at the bottom of the waistband. The sleeves are typical of the era - voluminous with a neat buttoned cuff. The arms are not lined which gives just the faintest hint of skin underneath. The dress is lined in a quality acetate fabric while the buttons are plastic. The waistband is backed with a thick cream grosgrain fabric. Below the waistband the dress has a further 4 popper fastenings to allow full access.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe dress is in excellent vintage condition with the muslin cotton fabric still fresh looking and crisp. It carries the Christian Dior London label, design number 59140. On very close inspection we have noted a pin sized black mark that is generally lost in the design on the rear of the skirt. The lining is showing wear on the skirt portion of the dress with numerous small holes in a localised area. These of course cannot be seen on the outside of the dress and are mentioned for accuracy. The lining could very easy be replaced in the lower portion of the dress or even removed if desired. Of note there is a reasonable seam allowance in this dress so alterations could be made on the side seams. Furthermore, it would not be a difficult task to move the poppers or the buttons to gain a tiny bit of extra room down the front of the dress. We have sold many pieces by the House over the years and although unlabelled, we are confident of the construction and pedigree. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is an ethereal, masterfully layered dress that commences with a full-length, princess-seamed sheath dress. This bottom layer is sleeveless. Over laying this sheath dress is a full length, faux cape that cascades from the shoulder seams and crosses over the back to make up the second layer. Finalising this sequence of layers is an asymmetric train that again, travels the full length of the dress from the left shoulder. Due to the dress being made up of both the sheath dress and this overlapping wrap, there are two zips.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis dress has been exquisitely designed to allow the wearer an incredibly, weightless, layered look without adding bulk. The dress is beautifully lined in silk and is a piece of skilled couture whilst Marc Bohan was at the helm of Dior. There are no significant marks or issues and the dress has clearly only been worn once or twice in its lifetime. The four glass pearls complete the look and unusually the backs of these Dior earrings are set in what looks to be copper. Each bead is held in by a gold jewellery tack and all of the beads rotate individually. They are both signed Christian Dior, copyright symbol and dated 1960. In excellent vintage condition with no nicks or scratches to the glass. The sleeves can be turned up if desired as they have a V slit opening. It is so well made that these examples are generally known as 'demi couture' and were made to almost the same standards as the haute couture line. Of complex construction and cut from a beautiful pink and red damask silk, with stunning bow detail at the left hip. It epitomises perfectly Dior's most celebrated silhouette, that of a nipped in waist and full hipped skirt. The bodice features a crossover front, and the fabric is draped across the back to create a layered effect. The skirt features two stiffened net tulle underskirts to create extra volume and structure. The inside of the dress is lined with a soft and delicate white silk organza, which would feel incredible on the body when worn. The dress is accessed from the side zip of the bodice and a central rear zip which also has dainty poppers to fasten the skirt portion.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe label, which is perfectly intact, reads 'Made in France, Christian Dior Paris, 2813201', and having researched numerous archives and haute couture collections, we feel it can be dated to 1956\/57 - a period which oversaw the climax of Dior's career, and the production of some of his final designs.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis condition of this Dior is nothing short of extraordinary and she has been very carefully preserved. Slight adjustments appear to have been made for the comfort of the two owners over time. We note that the dress has been let out slightly at both of the side seams and we believe the exterior zip is a quality replacement - though the inner central zip is certainly the original. These alterations have been done incredibly well and all the original fabric is retained. The darts at the back, which are unseen due to the cross over bodice, have been let out slightly; the hem has also been taken up, but no area of the dress has been cut or altered permanently. All of these alterations are very easily returned to their original state if desired. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe craftsmanship and detail in this piece is truly spectacular, and it is in fabulous vintage condition, aside from the very minor alterations noted already. We found only a very small tea stain on the inside of the tulle underskirt - not visible at all when worn. She is also a very rare generous size and would fit a size 12 UK, or 8 US, with a generous seam allowance on the skirt. A professional seamstress could also take her back to her slightly smaller original size. Our model is a UK 8-10 and 5ft 11in (180cm) and this dress fit her well.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e1950s Dior dresses of this magnitude and age rarely come on the market and we are not likely to see another. Either way, its superbly made with many of the hallmarks of the House's haute couture pieces and a good deal of hand finishing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen this dress first came into Circa's collection I was struck by how similar the lattice work design is to the Spring 1978 haute couture collection although this dress appears to be a little older. We've added a few photos from the runway to show the identical design. The collection is particularly important as this design forms the main ornamentation for the Dior haute couture bridal gown made for the Royal Wedding of King Hussein of Jordan to his American bride Elizabeth Halaby. We have added a photograph after their wedding ceremony in Amman, Jordan, June 17th 1978.
