Staged in a former 19th-century church, the show unfolded like a glittering ritual, with models in slashed, sheer, and intricately beaded gowns that celebrated the body. The presentation arrived amid renewed buzz around Macdonald’s work, fueled in part by Gigi Hadid’s headline-making appearance in one of his barely-there beaded jumpsuits at a Sports Illustrated event. This was the show that revitalised Macdonald’s place at the center of the red-carpet conversation.

Walking the runway as look 31/57, this dress was a glittering disco-ball in a collection that was monochrome in the majority. Up close, the embellishment is incredibly detailed. The paillettes are all individually stitched at each end with a tonal thread onto the mesh. Batik-inspired patterns were spangled with diamantes and appeared across beachy separates and show-stopping gowns. As Vogue wrote, “in the mind of this Welshman, it’s always going to be all about the rhinestones”.

Walking the runway as look 52/52, this jumpsuit was the glittering finale - a contemporary take on a classic bridal finale piece. Tailored from a fine mesh in a pale nude hue, it has a body-con silhouette. The entire piece is detailed with elaborate embroidery, tonal beads, pearls and iridescent sequins. The embellishment forms delicate geometric shapes, checkerboards, leaves, petals and vines up and down the body, appearing to adorn the skin itself. It has a low-cut front which is filled with a barely there, palest pink mesh. Petals of embroidered cloth trim the neckline. The jumpsuit zips up the centre back and is unlined. The ankles also have zip closures.

This piece is in very good archival vintage condition and is the actual show piece from the runway. Our couture trained seamstress has expertly restored this ensemble and she presents beautifully. There are no labels as this was the actual runway piece so please check the measurements below closely. A sample size so suitable for a UK 6 or US 0-2. We do not have the skirt which was attached separately.

Note on the designer: Julien Macdonald OBE rose to prominence in the late 1990s. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he was hired by Karl Lagerfeld to work at Chanel, and was later appointed chief designer at Givenchy. In 1997, Macdonald launched his eponymous label and it was here that he cemented his reputation for high-octane, couture-level craftsmanship. He was named “British Fashion Designer of the Year” at the 2001 British Fashion Awards and, in 2006, he was awarded an OBE for services to fashion. Macdonald is known for his meticulous handwork, opulent fabrics, and body-sculpting silhouettes that marry traditional techniques with unabashed sensuality. His designs, often featuring intricate beading, feather work, and lacework, have made him a red carpet favorite and a key figure in modern fashion, celebrated for reviving the spectacle and decadence of haute couture in a contemporary context.

MEASUREMENTS

BUST - 32 in. Reviewing the show, Vogue noted “the florals on some of the sheer, lacy, bedroom-glamour dresses came from vintage twenties frocks," an influence reflected in the delicate construction and embellishment of this look.

The dress, which sits above the knee, is cut from layers of pale cream silk chiffon with fine spaghetti straps and a rounded v-neckline at the front and back. Soft ruffled chiffon panels cascade from the skirt, becoming longer towards the back to create an asymmetric waterfall effect, while a subtle bubble hem adds volume. The front is embellished with intricate bronze, pewter and gold beadwork interspersed with featherlight, leaf-shaped chiffon appliqués. It is fully lined in tonal textured silk crepe and fastens beneath the left arm with a concealed zip and hook-and-eye fastening.

The accompanying cover-up is cut from matching cream silk chiffon and follows the runway styling. Designed with slim spaghetti straps and a sleeveless silhouette, it is generously cut to float around the body, with cascading ruffled chiffon panels and a dramatic asymmetric hem that sweeps the floor. It is unlined and fastens at the bust with a single mother-of-pearl button.

To demonstrate the versatility of the set, we have also styled the dress layered over the coordinating cover-up, creating a softer, more understated silhouette than the original runway styling. The two pieces can be worn together or separately, offering a variety of looks. Both garments are in excellent vintage condition, with the dress remaining new with its original tags attached. There are no flaws or marks to either piece. Labelled an Italian size 40, equivalent to approximately a UK 8 or US 4. The fabric composition is 97% silk, 2% polyamide and 1% elastane. The fabric has no stretch.

Note on the designer: Julien Macdonald OBE rose to prominence in the late 1990s. Vogue described the suspended dresses such as this one as “feats of engineering”. It is crafted from panels of beige mesh embellished all-over with triangular sequins in crimson red. These are attached to the mesh with tonal red thread. The effect is reptilian and the model on the runway appears to have a glittering second skin which wraps and drapes around her body. The midi length dress plays with proportions, balancing the single long sleeve with an asymmetric skirt with thigh-high slit. There is a dramatic cut-out along the right side of the waist - from hip to underarm - broken only by the heavily embellished, tube bead-adorned waistband. The waistband is lined with red satin and the inside of the seams with beige tulle, however the rest of the dress is unlined. It fastens under the left arm with a hidden tonal zip.

The dress is in very good, bordering on excellent, archival vintage condition having been expertly restored in the Circa atelier. Please note that some of the colour has worn away from the sequins and from the cylindrical beads around the waistband but this cannot be noticed when worn. The fabric has no stretch and the dress is best for a sample size, UK 6 or US 0-2. There are no size or composition labels as this was the show piece and almost certainly the only piece ever made.

Note on the designer: Julien Macdonald OBE rose to prominence in the late 1990s.
