The style reminds me of a Ballet Russe costume as there is a strong eastern and folk influence in the design. The simple empire line tunic dress falls to the ankle and is lined with a soft cotton slip. The overlay fabric is an incredibly fine cotton/silk tulle net embellished with intricate embroidery. Finely woven chord has been painstakingly sewn into tiny clusters to create intricate floral motifs in geometric peaks rising from the hemline. A dainty button stand at the centre reverse of the tunic runs from the neck to the hip and hosts a row of exquisite fabric covered buttons each 0.5cms across. The round neckline is trimmed with a thin lace trim and fastens with a single button above the centre of the bust. The smocked tunic is comprised of transparent fine tulle net in its entirety and embellished with the same embroidered design along the hem and bust line. There is a neat collar with a central button stand that runs to the mid bust with another pretty row of fabric buttons. The embroidered cuffs are drawn in to create romantic bishop-style sleeves. This magical bridal set has no notable flaws and would best suit US size 2-4, UK size 6-8 as the dress is small; however the tunic, which can be worn separately will fit up to US size 8. The entire piece is made up of handmade tape lace, a unique style of lace-making that was introduced at the end of the 19th century. In particular, Belgium lace incorporated floral and leaf patterns into the intricate designs and it is reputed to be called princess lace because the Belgium Royal Family used it. This type of tape lace is more commonly referred to as battenburg lace in the US. The piece is a beautiful example of such workmanship may have gone over a bridal dress, with a stylish plunging dinner-blazer style collar that can be worn open, or fastened at the neck. The romantic bishop sleeves finish in dramatic 5" cuff details, and there is a matching crochet belt to accompany the piece, 2" wide and with hook fastenings. The jacket falls open from a delicate hook fastening at the front of the waist down to the hem of the skirt, which finishes just below the knee. In excellent antique condition. It is modelled on an earlier 18th century Polynesian style dress and is made from a very fine cotton in a sweet floral design of pinks and blues representing the flowers of the French nobility. It has a high sweetheart neckline and a princess seamed bodice with an inverted waistband following the lines of what would have been a traditional corset. The sleeve is an elaborate and shortened version of a leg of mutton style whilst the skirt element is a lavish affair of folded and pinned fabric leading to an arrangement of fabric swags on the lower third of the dress. It is an archetypal 1930s shirt-waister design that reaches ankle length and has a full A-line skirt. The entire design is a repeat cut out and embroidered floral pattern in stiffened organza cotton. This is a clever design whereby the bolero jacket is made to look like a separate part of the dress; however, it is actually joined at the side seams and across the shoulders. The design has tapered puff sleeves and opens to the front of the bodice with popper fastenings. For decoration, 3 original glass buttons have been placed along the button stand. There is further access along the waist side seam whereby there are additional poppers. The dress has a V neck collar but rounded lapels in keeping with the more feminine look of the piece. The fabric is a superb silk taffeta in a rose print whilst the colours are chartreuse and earth tones of ochre and orange. It has wide straps, a fitted empire bust line with a balconette lining inside and a grosgrain strap to support the under bust. From the empire line flares an elongated A-line Princess seamed bodice. The low slung skirt, which is a deep gathered flounce, finishes below the knee and is of particularly lavish construction. There is a stiffened fine linen backing the flounce that is also supported by a second yellow linen under flounce to give unrivalled volume. The dress is also lined in a stiffened dyed yellow organza type fabric to give the dress a very structured look. It fastens to the rear with the original metal zip that is hidden along one of the seams. The dress, by one of the finest partnerships of decadent evening and occasion wear during the period is labelled Traina-Norell. At first, we almost missed the label as it is hidden in the folds of the flounce towards the bottom of the dress. In very good to excellent vintage condition overall. Silk taffeta is notoriously prone to aging and this silk is in extremely good condition with no yarn separation. We have dry cleaned and the silk retains all of its lustre. However, in certain places, notably near the back of the zip, there is what we would call 'handling marks' which has resulted in slight 'greying' of the fabric, although it's very difficult to spot unless looking closely. There is the tiniest amount of fraying on the very edges of the shoulder straps.

There is a very wide seam allowance on this dress and it could be altered at least one size bigger if not two by a trained seamstress. Elizabeth Taylor famously chose a medieval style gown for her second marriage to Richard Burton and she was very popular with Diana, Princess of Wales, who wore a near identical dress on her tour of Canada in 1983 (as pictured). This particular piece we feel is a little earlier; from the late 1970s or possibly early 1980s and is one of the most extravagant designs we have seen outside of a museum.

The floor length dress has an empire waist and is made of the finest cream silk and cotton muslin materials, with lace insert details, in a style reminiscent of the 1850s. The gathered sleeves tie with a ribbon at the cuff, whilst the intricate bodice has an integral caplet overlay to the cotton blouse element. Gina often used antique lace in her work and there is a lavish amount of beautiful machine lace and ruffle trim, interwoven with a cream ribbon to match the silk. The fabric is gathered to the waist, which features a ribbon and lace decorative belt.

There are three skirts which together have a lovely weight to them and excite movement: the first two are liners in a beautiful quality cream rayon that add volume. The final cream silk overlay is trimmed with lace all the way down to the hem, which falls slightly longer at the back, creating a short train. The dress fastens with buttons down the back of the bodice, poppers for the waist belt and a zip for the skirt portion.

The details on this dress are truly spectacular and it is in wonderful vintage condition, with no stains or flaws of any note. She has been carefully cleaned by us and is now remarkably fresh looking and ready to wear for her next big occasion. The design would best fit up to a UK 10, or 6 US. Our model is a UK 6-8, US 2-4 so there was room to spare.

MEASUREMENTS:
BUST: 32 in. The mod dress style of the 60s was beginning to wane and full length Victoriana returned for its first fashion come back in a century.

This is a superb example of her flamboyant work, probably mid 1970s, with a tiered mousseline cotton dress with a high neck collar and a lace ruffle trim paired with a sleeveless bolero jacket. The jacket is integral to the dress and is attached at the shoulder seams.

The dress is split into two tiers, one tier with a floral print that finishes just around knee length. The floral spray print is shaped like a bouquet, tied with a double bow and actually has the designer's name attached as a kind of gift card. I've never seen Gina Fratini apply her name to print before. The bottom tier, which reaches to the floor, is an A-line panel of plain white mousseline that is also edged in lace.
The sleeves are gently gathered and have a frill hem whilst it fastens to the rear with the longest tier having the original metal zip. The other two layers are simply fastened with a couple of hook and eyes at the neckline. The print on the capelet is quite abstract looking with a procession of circles in a teal green and pale navy.

An elaborate dress suitable for special occasions; it would make a fantastic alternative wedding dress. Both pieces are is in really super vintage condition with no issues of any note. The muslin has been freshly laundered and it is ready to wear. It will fit sizes up to a UK 8-10 or US 4-6.

NOTES ON DESIGNER:

Gina Fratini was a British designer renowned during the 1970s and early 1980s for her romantic gowns which were of elaborate construction. I really love the medium weight voile-like fabric that is overlaid with black, flocked velvet, polka dots. The dress is Princess seamed and the skirt is a very flared, circle design that falls to around mid-calf. The underskirt of the dress is lined in a slightly darker peach acetate and this is also stiffened with a honeycomb, medium tulle net. So in total, there are three layers on the skirt.

The bodice of the dress is fully lined in a peach acetate. There is no label present, but the dress has clearly been manufactured and probably in the USA, as the stitch holes remain on the acetate where the label once was. It fastens to the side with the original zip and the spaghetti straps are made from an acetate. This dress has belt loops although no belt was present when we purchased it. We've added this fine black ribbon which we think looks perfect as a belt.

Great vintage condition with absolutely no issues and best suited to up to a UK size 10 or US 6. It would have almost certainly been made by the same team as the haute couture collections and is in a wonderful cream checked muslin that features large embroidered Swiss dots. The dress is a v neck shirtwaister design with fabric covered buttons down to the upper-waist. The gathered skirt reaches to the floor. The dress features romantic, poet style, three-quarter length sleeves. To give greater volume to the piece, there is a cream muslin petticoat retained and original to this ensemble. This is not attached to the dress; therefore, the dress could be worn with or without to suit the wearer's taste. A ribbon belt which matches the V neck and arm trims is also included.

In really excellent vintage condition, there are just a couple of very small, scattered marks in the muslin, but these are very faded and not at all obvious or noticeable when wearing.
