Vogue described the suspended dresses such as this one as “feats of engineering”. It is crafted from panels of beige mesh embellished all-over with triangular sequins in crimson red. These are attached to the mesh with tonal red thread. The effect is reptilian and the model on the runway appears to have a glittering second skin which wraps and drapes around her body. The midi length dress plays with proportions, balancing the single long sleeve with an asymmetric skirt with thigh-high slit. There is a dramatic cut-out along the right side of the waist - from hip to underarm - broken only by the heavily embellished, tube bead-adorned waistband. The waistband is lined with red satin and the inside of the seams with beige tulle, however the rest of the dress is unlined. It fastens under the left arm with a hidden tonal zip.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dress is in very good, bordering on excellent, archival vintage condition having been expertly restored in the Circa atelier. Please note that some of the colour has worn away from the sequins and from the cylindrical beads around the waistband but this cannot be noticed when worn. The fabric has no stretch and the dress is best for a sample size, UK 6 or US 0-2. There are no size or composition labels as this was the show piece and almost certainly the only piece ever made.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNote on the designer: Julien Macdonald OBE rose to prominence in the late 1990s. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he was hired by Karl Lagerfeld to work at Chanel, and was later appointed chief designer at Givenchy. In 1997, Macdonald launched his eponymous label and it was here that he cemented his reputation for high-octane, couture-level craftsmanship. He was named “British Fashion Designer of the Year” at the 2001 British Fashion Awards and, in 2006, he was awarded an OBE for services to fashion.
