Examples of these dresses are held in museums worldwide. Horrockses was born in the mid 1940s and produced mostly cotton garments which were designed in London and made in cotton designed and produced by the Horrockses mill in Preston. They were famous throughout the UK and the US for their well made classic 1950s floral printed summer dresses with full skirts and were successful in improving the image of cotton across the upscale stores they were sold in. They continued to produce sought after dresses until the end of the 50s when their top designers left. In good to very good vintage condition for a dress which we are sure has been to one or two grand parties over its exciting life. On very close inspection, we noticed two or three small pin holes here or there on the bodice and a few blemishes on the back near the zip but nothing which would detract from the overall look. The net overskirts are in terrific shape but the acetate under-layer has water-markings or slight staining on the front; these of course are not seen when worn but mentioned for accuracy. There is a cross over tie detail at the front too and the dress has a centered rear zip.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThere are no labels but this piece has clearly been made by a design house and would have retailed in a very high-end department store in America. Construction wise, there are higher end elements such as the silk organza lining, generous seam allowance and under garment fastenings on the shoulder. The condition is very good to excellent - the fabric retains its lustre and sheen and the dress has seen little use in its life. One or two small seams have minor strain marks but this is very common in vintage dresses. Fundamentally the dress has not sustained any damage and these are not noticeable when worn. We did notice that the dress has been re-hemmed and importantly the new hemline, which is higher, has not been made permanent. There is not even a crease so it could very easily be returned to its original length (around 3 inches longer). That said, there is a reasonable amount of skilled work in the invisible hem and we have left this for the new owner. The updated hemline is more modern and probably more appropriate for today's wearer.
