The French manufacturer Hermès was established in 1837 and is today renowned for high quality clothing, accessories and perfume. German born Thierry Hermès was an established harness maker who made fine wrought harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade from his workshop in Paris.  His sons took over the firm and later introduced saddlery where they employed 80 saddle makers and catered to clients such as the czar of Russia.  In 1922 their repertoire grew to include beautiful handbags and they were the first to use the zipper in leather goods and clothing in France.  By 1938 they had started making their legendary silk scarves which today remain highly coveted by royalty, celebrities and collectors.
