The Italian fashion house was founded in Milan by Gianni Versace in 1978. As well as designing luxury clothing, the Versace Group has become a leading brand internationally for accessories, fragrance, jewellery, make up and home furnishings. They also operate the Palazzo Versace hotels in
Australia and Dubai. Versace is renowned for designing Elizabeth Hurley's black dress held together with large gold safety pins which she wore to the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994.  After Gianni was murdered in 1997, Donatella Versace took over as creative director.
