The French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent is one of the most esteemed fashion designers of all time. His 45 year career began with taking over the house of Christian Dior in 1957 at the tender age of 21 before launching his own label in 1962. From Mondrian inspired shift dresses to 1940's inspired Palazzo trouser suits evoking the days of the Nazi Occupation, his daring approach to fashion informed by social and political themes both shocked and delighted the fashion world. He opened his ready-to-wear boutique Rive Gauche in 1966 and throughout his career was responsible for pioneering groundbreaking looks such as safari for men and women, Le Smoking tuxedo suits for women and reviving silhouettes from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. Yves Saint Laurent's muses include the Somali model Iman, Catherine Deneuve and the French model and actress Laetitia Casta.
