The style reminds me of a Ballet Russe costume as there is a strong eastern and folk influence in the design. The simple empire line tunic dress falls to the ankle and is lined with a soft cotton slip. The overlay fabric is an incredibly fine cotton/silk tulle net embellished with intricate embroidery. Finely woven chord has been painstakingly sewn into tiny clusters to create intricate floral motifs in geometric peaks rising from the hemline. A dainty button stand at the centre reverse of the tunic runs from the neck to the hip and hosts a row of exquisite fabric covered buttons each 0.5cms across. The round neckline is trimmed with a thin lace trim and fastens with a single button above the centre of the bust. The smocked tunic is comprised of transparent fine tulle net in its entirety and embellished with the same embroidered design along the hem and bust line. There is a neat collar with a central button stand that runs to the mid bust with another pretty row of fabric buttons. The embroidered cuffs are drawn in to create romantic bishop-style sleeves. This magical bridal set has no notable flaws and would best suit US size 2-4, UK size 6-8 as the dress is small; however the tunic, which can be worn separately will fit up to US size 8. For the serious collector, this piece is worthy of a museum and would make an outstanding wedding dress ensemble.

Tunic Measurements:
Length - 25.5" (64.5cms)
Bust - 40" (101.5cms)
Waist - 46" (116.5cms)

Dress Measurements:
Bust - 34"/ 87cm
Length - 45"/ 114cm
Waist - 25"/ 64.5cm
Hip - 34"/ 87cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0398/5978/1798/products/antique-1910s-ivory-tulle-dress-with-ballet-russe-style-knotted-tunic.jpg?v=1617909360
antique-1910s-white-battenburg-or-princess-tape-lace-bridal-dress-jacket-uk-size-6-8
Antique 1910s White Battenburg or Princess Tape Lace Bridal Dress Jacket

This exquisite 1900 - 1910s white battenburg or princess tape lace dress jacket is of exceptional quality and craftsmanship and is increasingly scare in this condition. The entire piece is made up of handmade tape lace, a unique style of lace-making that was introduced at the end of the 19th century. In particular, Belgium lace incorporated floral and leaf patterns into the intricate designs and it is reputed to be called princess lace because the Belgium Royal Family used it. This type of tape lace is more commonly referred to as battenburg lace in the US. The piece is a beautiful example of such workmanship may have gone over a bridal dress, with a stylish plunging dinner-blazer style collar that can be worn open, or fastened at the neck. The romantic bishop sleeves finish in dramatic 5" cuff details, and there is a matching crochet belt to accompany the piece, 2" wide and with hook fastenings. The jacket falls open from a delicate hook fastening at the front of the waist down to the hem of the skirt, which finishes just below the knee. In excellent antique condition. Pure white with no stains. We have spotted one or two broken brides which of course could be repaired; however they in no way detract from this exceptional item and are only seen on very close inspection. Many later 1920s Assiut fabrics feature coptic symbols which is indicative of fabric produced for export and demand was insatiable. This piece is a wonderful example of soutache work. Originating in France, soutache dates back to the 15th century but gained renewed popularity during the Victorian era. This jacket was created by Dublin and Cork based costume and mantle shop, Forest & Sons Ltd. This jacket is tailored to a robe style, with a decadent, wide spread silk collar that hangs down the rear of the jacket. The back of the collar finishes in a point, and is trimmed with a braided tassel finished with a long fringe. The fabric is highly detailed; black silk topped with net and finished with criss-crossing, spiraling and intertwined soutache work. It has an elongated silhouette and falls with a straight cut to ankle length - a decadent cover-up atop a piece of evening-wear. The front of this jacket is secured with a large braid-adorned button. This wonderfully preserved piece of history would make a beautiful addition for a fine costume enthusiast and collector. Its the finest soutache example Circa has ever had in the collection.

This piece is in very fine antique condition, particularly for a piece of over 120 years of age with no issues of any note. Carved from genuine Whitby jet, it is engraved with a twisting rope and S-shaped forms that curve around two spheres. There are cut-out details which allow the fabric of the wearer’s clothes to be glimpsed. The back features a long clasp which is secured with a C-clasp. This brooch, which is much larger than average for Victorian jewellery, is in excellent antique condition - particularly for a piece closing in on 150 years of age. There are no dents or surface scratches visible to the naked eye; only the smallest bit of wear to the metal at the rear in keeping with age.

Few materials are more closely associated with Victorian fashion than Whitby jet. This deep black gemstone, formed from fossilised wood over 180 million years ago, was found along the Yorkshire coast and crafted into jewellery by local artisans for centuries. Its rise to fame, however, came through one of the most defining moments of the Victorian era.

Following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria entered a prolonged period of mourning and adopted Whitby jet as her jewellery of choice. Its rich black colour reflected the solemnity expected during bereavement, while its subtle lustre offered an elegance that diamonds and coloured gemstones could not. As images of the Queen circulated throughout Britain, demand for jet jewellery soared.

By the late nineteenth century, Whitby jet had moved beyond mourning dress and into mainstream fashion. Its dramatic appearance complemented the era's luxurious silks, velvets and lace, making it a favourite for evening wear as well as memorial jewellery. Its Gothic appeal was further cemented in 1897 when Bram Stoker chose Whitby as a key setting for his novel Dracula. Today, antique Whitby jet remains highly collectible, valued for its craftsmanship, rarity and rich historical associations.

MEASUREMENTS

LENGTH - 2.5 in. Of note, the design and fabrics are entirely original and our restoration at Circa has been very minimal. The dress is made from high grade mulberry woven silk, with just past the elbow length sleeves, a nipped in waist and draped skirt which falls to the ankle. There is an elegant, attached Watteau train to the reverse. Tonal lace in a repeat floral pattern frames the silhouette either side of the sash waistband, trims the sleeves, is appliqued on the shoulders, below the bust, and the centre back. The neckline and low-back are detailed with tonal silk tulle for modesty. The tulle is trimmed with delicate circles of lace at the neck and top of the back. The dress is not lined and fastens at the back with hidden hook-and-eyes.

Increasingly rare to market, we consider this wedding dress to be in outstanding antique condition. She presents beautifully and is wearable with care. The silk has the odd small or faint age related mark here and there but nothing you would notice when wearing. Very faint halos in the underarm area and some barely noticeable grazing to the silk. The dress is unlabelled but this is a high quality dressmakers piece from a fine establishment of the day.
