1920s Gold Lame Full Length Coat with Vermilion-Red Lining
products.product.pickup_availability.unavailable
This is a wonderfully dramatic 1920s coat made from deep gold lamé with a matte vermilion-red lining. It is very well made, with hand finishing and a straight silhouette that falls to the ankle. For all its richness, it remains highly wearable today without feeling costume-like. Worn open, the asymmetric fastening lets the fabric cascade down and around the body in a sweeping waterfall, showing off the red lining. When closed, flashes of red remain visible along the front hem and across the open collar. A large button covered in gold lamé and red fabric secures the coat at the left side of the waist. Inside, a fabric loop and a tortoiseshell and gold button provide a second fastening.
The coat is in very good antique condition, and has clearly been a much loved and cherished piece. There is some tarnishing to the lamé, which probably contains a small amount of silver so that it has darkened in a few places. The original lining could be silk or rayon and has faded evenly throughout. It also has some nicks and black marks at hip level. These marks are on the lining and cannot be seen when worn. We did consider relining the coat, but felt the original was worth preserving and have chosen to leave it in place. Any label the coat may have had has been lost over time.
We’ve all tried this on at Circa, from a UK 6–8, US 2–4 up to a UK 12, US 8 which is the size of our model, and we could all wear it. It may be tight across broad shoulders, so please check the measurements carefully. The fabric has no stretch and it is best suited to wearers of at least 5'4" height and above, as the hem can touch the floor.

What is archival fashion?
Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.
How is archival fashion different from vintage?
While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
