1990s Yves Saint Laurent Mustard Cotton Safari-Style Jacket

£450.00

This 1990s Yves Saint Laurent jacket recalls the safari styles that became a signature of the house in the late 1960s. Tailored from thick mustard-coloured cotton, it combines a straight-cut silhouette with substantial buttons and distinctive pocket detailing. The V-neckline leads into a front fastening of large, textured brown buttons with a wood-like appearance. Two patch pockets sit at the chest, their flaps finished with Western-inspired detailing. The sleeves have a gently flared shape, gathered into cuffs that fasten with chunky buttons. The jacket is unlined.

In excellent vintage condition with no issues of any note. Labelled a size 36, approximately equivalent to a UK 8 or US 4. There is no composition label remaining and the fabric has no stretch, so please check our measurements below.

Notes on Designer: Yves Saint Laurent was one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century, bringing the precision of masculine tailoring to women’s wardrobes without sacrificing glamour. Following his early career at Christian Dior, he established his own house in 1961, developing a distinctive style characterised by strong silhouettes, rich colour and contrasting textures. His introduction of Le Smoking in 1966 challenged the conventions of women’s evening dress, while his Rive Gauche line helped establish ready-to-wear as a serious counterpart to haute couture. Catherine Deneuve, Betty Catroux and Loulou de La Falaise were among his best-known clients and muses.

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
