1930s Black Chiffon Applique Bodice and Lace Dress
This beautiful black lace slip dress was made in the 1930s. Gowns of this era are extremely collectable, particularly when they’re in such rare excellent condition and a generous size. It is tailored from sheer silk chiffon at the top, detailed with appliquéd chiffon petals forming flower shapes. The skirt is tailored from inky black lace formed of organic spiralling shapes and attaches to the chiffon at the top with an off-kilter hem which follows the chiffon pattern. The neckline is wide with a soft V-shape and it is sleeveless. This dress is unlined and, as a result, has a peekaboo, skin-flashing finish although this is quite understated on the torso. There is a concealed side zip for access although I think this was added later. It is likely that this dress was in fact an overlay and would have sat on top of a slip or under garment made especially. For modern red carpets and event dressing, these lace dresses look spectacular on their own or over modern underwear and bodysuits.
In excellent antique condition, gently worn with no flaws worth mentioning. Unlabelled, it is a very well made piece, probably bespoke or couture. Please check the measurements below carefully as the fabric only has a little give. I'm the owner of Circa and I actually tried on this dress for size as the measurements are a UK 12, small 14 which is a US 8-10. This worked on me and would be good for those with a bigger bust. The dress came to my ankles at 5ft 4in or 162 cm.

Will you set anything aside for me before I come?
We are happy to find anything you may be interested in from our website - please let us know a week in advance.
We also have an extensive offline collection. If you let us know your size, style, favourite colour to wear and perhaps your budget, we can browse through our archive in advance of your appointment.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
Clients may wish to bring modern shapewear when trying on garments from certain eras, especially the 1950s. Vintage clothing was often worn with undergarments that shaped the waist and as such is tailored for them.
We have a huge variety of slip dresses and petticoats to complete your look; many of which are also for sale.
You may also wish to bring your favourite footwear. We often find a classic pair of nude shoes work well when trying on, or a pair in gold or silver.
Do you have a price range?
Many of our lower-priced pieces (under £150) are not available to buy online. Our prices range from £80 - £600 for separates. Dresses start at around £150 and go up to £2,500 for the very best antique pieces and designer vintage. Our bridalwear ranges from £300 - £3,000.
