In 1982, Jean Paul Gaultier founded his eponymous fashion label. Striring controversy from the off, he gained notoriety by sending male models out in skirts and using underwear as outerwear. Gaultier became known for his reinvention of garments such as the marinière, corset and kilt. Seen to be a magician of uniting the radical and the traditional in his eclectic designs, the term "Gaultiered" was coined to describe his take on classic pieces.
