1970s Jeff Banks for Clobber Russet Printed Shirtwaister Dress
Celebrated British designer Jeff Banks designed this playful, russet toned printed dress in the mid 1970s. Tailored to a shirt-dress silhouette, this piece is both smart and feminine, with slightly ruched shoulders and subtle bishop style sleeves. Celebrated for his captivating prints, this dress is decorated with an abstract take on florals that "wallpaper" the russet background in dark green, cream and mustard. The wide lapels are a signature of the designer and the prevailing trend at the time; this example is finished with three rows of bold white running stitch. Three large plastic buttons in pale cream secure the front of the dress below a V-shape neckline. The dress has two patch pockets at the chest and a coordinating belt with a large cream plastic rectangular buckle. The dress is unlined. Notes on Designer: Jeff Banks was a pivotal member of the swinging 60s London fashion scene when he cofounded 'Clobber' in Blackheath Village, London, in 1964. The boutique carried both his own designs and the work of other designers and attracted celebrities such as Terence Stamp and Jean Shrimpton, Twiggy and some of the Beatles. It proved such a success that in 1969, he launched his own fashion label, opening the first standalone Jeff Banks shop, as well as retail outlets in twenty-two department stores including Harrods and Harvey Nichols.
The dress is in truly excellent vintage condition with no flaws of any note and looks barely worn. Made in England, it is made from high quality 100% Viscose. It doesn’t have a size label so please check the measurements below as the fabric has no stretch. The measurements suggest a best fit for sizes up to a UK 10-12, US 6-8.
