1920s Rayon Cream Crochet Maxi-Dress with Fringe Hem
This original 1920s fringed flapper dress is a rare survivor from the period. Beautiful, and a very-early example of its kind, it has been hand-crocheted from a pale cream rayon silk yarn. The silhouette feels highly contemporary; it is cut to skim the curves and falls to the calf where a long cream fringe provides coverage to the ankle. The sleeves are long and the neckline is sensuously relaxed and rounded. The body is unlined and is sheer, furthering the modern feel. We think it could be beautiful paired with modern shapewear or an antique slip from the same era.
This exceptional piece is in excellent antique condition with no issues; you may want to continue to separate out and straighten the fringed strands as this will need to be done on each wear. Entirely handmade, this antique garment has no labels so please check the below measurements carefully. Given the nature of the yarn and crochet knit, we think it will work on a range of sizes up to a UK 10 or US 6.

What is archival fashion?
Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.
How is archival fashion different from vintage?
While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
