1960s Black Crepe and Georgette Column Dress

£380.00

This mid 1960s black column dress is chic, sophisticated and perfect for any formal occasion. It has a georgette fabric neckline which is slightly transparent, rounded to both the front and back. The bodice is made from a soft black crepe and is gathered round the bust for a flattering fit, with vertical keyhole detail to the centre. The dress fastens down the back with the original zip and hook and eye closure. The crepe skirt flows down from the high point of the waist in a classic empire cut - a very typical silhouette for the era. It has two neat front pleats and has a small slit up the left hand side seam, reaching to around knee height. This piece would look fabulous for a black tie cocktail event, accessorised with vintage jewellery and an elegant pair of heels.

The dress is in very good vintage condition overall with just a small abrasion near the the under bust side seam. It does appear that the neckline was lined in a cream georgette but this has been removed; however, we rather like the sheerness of the neckline as it is now. The designer's name is no longer in the dress but it is an American made piece for a high-end department store with the ILGWU label used between 1964 and 1973. We feel it would best fit up to a size 8 UK, or 4 US. Our model is a UK 6-8 and 5ft 4in (163cm) and this was slightly roomy on her bust but otherwise fit her well.

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
