ARCHIVE: 1970s Gunne Sax Cotton Lace and Teal Velvet Dress

£0.00 Sold out
Full length and elaborate 1970s Gunne Sax cotton lace and teal velvet dress. This is a one of the more expensive medieval inspired gowns designed by Jessica McClintock which dates from the middle of the decade. It is in an unbleached poplin cotton with velveteen teal inserts encompassing the waistband, deep V neck, front apron panel and tapered, zip up cuffs. The dress has been adorned with two types of crochet lace on the belt and some of the trims in the teal, the back of the yolk and then there is a cobweb style lace for the sheer sleeves.

The dress has three tiers for the skirt with the final having a deep gathered flounce. There is a front fastening lace up section in the corset which is entirely adjustable and can be tightened or loosened to suit the wearer’s preference. The zip is original to the dress and is covered by a placket. There is a side tie belt; this is very generous and is almost the length of the dress so it could be wrapped round several times as desired.

These dresses were worn to events and parties and tend to have suffered over time but this dress is in remarkably good condition. We note just the tiniest, thumbprint-size faded stain on the bottom flounce, together with some faded marks probably where somebody spilt a drink. There is a tiny thread of discoloration on the lace trim on the front panel. They're extremely difficult to spot when worn - your eye is not drawn to them at all. These would improve with further treatment over time. Lace is in superb condition and the velvet is excellent – no blemishes. Around a best fit for size a UK 8-10 or US 4-6.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

Clients may wish to bring modern shapewear when trying on garments from certain eras, especially the 1950s. Vintage clothing was often worn with undergarments that shaped the waist and as such is tailored for them.

We have a huge variety of slip dresses and petticoats to complete your look; many of which are also for sale.

You may also wish to bring your favourite footwear. We often find a classic pair of nude shoes work well when trying on, or a pair in gold or silver.

Do you have a price range?

Many of our lower-priced pieces (under £150) are not available to buy online. Our prices range from £80 - £600 for separates. Dresses start at around £150 and go up to £2,500 for the very best antique pieces and designer vintage. Our bridalwear ranges from £300 - £3,000.
