ARCHIVE - 1970s Jean Varon Art Deco Print Dress

£0.00 Sold out

This 1970s navy and beige art deco printed smock dress is by Jean Varon, renowned for his high end creations that were exquisitely made from the best fabrics. This dress has really desirable design features from the period, boasting bell or bishop's sleeves from which knife pleating falls from the bottom hem of the sleeve seam into a flared smock dress. The dress is high collared and features faux horn buttons which run from the top of the central button stand down the full length of the dress. There is a matching fabric belt that can be used to cinch in the waist on the dress to a floaty billowing look. One could also style these tie belts easily as scarves or headbands to change the look of the outfit.

The dress is in very good vintage condition with the fabric retaining its structure and fresh looking. We noted one small patch of age-related discoloration around the waistband area to the front, but this is very well disguised in the print and not noticeable when worn. Due to the dress’ billowing trapeze shape, it will fit a variety of sizes. The fabric composition is labelled 70% viscose 30% nylon and the label recommends dry cleaning.

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
