ARCHIVE - Late 1920s or early 30s Art Deco Cream and Gold Beaded Bag

£0.00 Sold out

Late 1920s or early 1930s cream and gold beaded handbag. The most striking feature about this bag is that is an unusual spade shape and a rare larger size for one carried by a finger strap. This darling bag despite being close to 100 years old can comfortably fit an iPhone 6 (not max) inside which is quite remarkable as most bags of this era were designed to hold a small lipstick and a couple of coins! The bag is intricately hand beaded and very much influenced by the Art Deco designs of the era. The beads are woven onto a very fine weave mesh fabric in antique cream. The finger strap means the bag can comfortably be carried with three fingers. The bag fastens with a popper closure.

Overall, the bag is in remarkably good antique condition; very sturdy and fresh looking. On careful inspection, there are around three or four gold rocaille beads missing on the whole bag and the front has both seed pearls and rice shaped pearls though much of the nacre has worn off on the seed pearls to leave a pale coloured milk glass underneath. This does not detract in anyway from the beauty of the bag. The lining is in extraordinarily clean condition with no markings of any kind. The bag was clearly kept for best use! Absolutely perfect for a collector of this era with its exquisite fashions and accessories. Or why not bring it back to life as a genuinely usable evening bag. Even more wonderful - this would suit the vintage bride perfectly!

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
