1970s Komar White Cotton Embroidered Scallop Hem Slip Dress
Dating to the 1970s, this white slip dress was made by Komar Lingerie, the longstanding American lingerie and sleepwear company founded in New York in 1908. The surviving label reads “Komar Lingerie 34 Short”, a vintage lingerie size rather than a modern dress size.
Tailored from lightweight fabric in pure white that we believe is most likely a cotton blend, the dress is opaque enough to be worn on its own. It has a gentle A-line silhouette with slim adjustable straps, tonal floral embroidery and scalloped edging at the neckline and hem. Originally designed as lingerie, it works particularly well today as part of the lingerie-as-outerwear trend, either worn alone in warm weather or layered over a T-shirt. It is unlined.
Very well made, the slip is in excellent vintage condition with no issues and is very fresh looking. There is no surviving composition label and the fabric has no stretch. Although labelled a 34, which evidently relates to bust size, please refer to the sizing information below to ensure the best fit. It looks best suited to a UK 8 or US 4 and would suit sizes smaller too.
Notes on Maker: Komar was founded by Charles Komar on New York’s Lower East Side in 1908 and developed into a major American manufacturer of lingerie and sleepwear. Particularly associated with slips, nightwear and easy-to-wear undergarments, the company later sold through leading American department stores including Lord & Taylor and Macy’s and remains in business today.

What is archival fashion?
Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.
How is archival fashion different from vintage?
While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
