1970s French Couture Navy Jersey Embellished Grecian Dress
This mid to late 1970s navy and sequin detail Grecian dress is a show stopping unlabelled couture piece. It is skilled work and has mostly been made by hands trained in haute couture techniques. The designer that immediately springs to mind is that of Loris Azzaro, whose simple and elegant lines came to epitomise the high end occasion wear of the era. His designs were worn by Marisa Berenson, Jane Birkin (pictured here), Brigitte Bardot and Romy Schneider among others. Following the 50th anniversary of the couture house, Olivier Theyskens took the top creative job in 2020 and has reimagined the famous key hole silhouettes and flowing lines of the founder.
The dress features a V neckline to both front and back, and gathered, capped sleeves with intricate gold and silver embroidery, beaded and sequin detail. The main fabric is cut from a true navy silk jersey, which feels lovely and soft on the skin. The material is gathered at the waist, which has a wide waistband, complete with an 'O' ring repeat pattern which reveals the skin. The skirt flows down to the floor and flows beautifully, lending itself to the more Grecian and bohemian styles of the late 1970s.
In beautiful vintage condition, with no marks or flaws. Although the fabric has some stretch, due to the nature of the embroidered waistband it would best fit up to a UK 10, or 6 US. An outstanding couture dress which could be worn for a high profile event or special occasion. Our model is a UK 6 US 0-2 and 5'11". This dress fit her well with some room to spare.

What is archival fashion?
Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.
How is archival fashion different from vintage?
While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
