1988 Chanel Runway Documented Striped Camelia Print Midi Dress

£4,800.00

This documented Chanel dress walked the runway as part of Chanel’s Spring 1988 collection and can just be seen in the background in one of the runway shots. The skirt is tailored from cotton to a full-skirted, midi-length that recalls 1950s styles. It is printed with black and white vertical stripes and blown-up motifs of Chanel’s house flower, the camelia, in contrasting rainbow hues of red, yellow, blue and green. The bustier top is crafted from black lace with a scalloped edge and is boned inside. At the neck, a wide satin ribbon forms a large bow at the front with three Chanel buttons which have been added later: two pearls with gold-toned metal double-C logos and a central black button smothered in black rhinestones. There is also a velcro fastening which has been added at the back of the neck but its been done well so we have left alone. The lace top is lined with sheer black silk crepe and elastic to hold its place. The skirt is lined with black tulle to add volume. The dress fastens at the centre back with a hidden zip and hook-and-eye.

We have paired the dress with a black Chanel ribbon belt, however, this is from a later collection and is listed seperately. In excellent vintage condition with no issues of any note other than the customisation. The whole ribbon or just the button decoration can easily be removed from the neckline as it is attached with just a few stitches. Labelled a French size 38 however this runs smaller and is better suited to a UK 8 or US 4 and below. There are no composition labels and the fabric has no stretch.

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
