1990s Yves Saint Laurent Black Single Breasted Wool Skirt Suit

£895.00

This timeless black wool skirt suit was designed by French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent during the late 1990s or 2000. It can likely be attributed to the great and late Alber Elbaz who briefly worked for the House from 1998 to 2000 having replaced the eponymous founder upon his retirement from designing the Rive Gauche collections. Tom Ford was brought in as head designer following the sale of the company to Gucci in 2000.

The skirt is cut to a high waist pencil style and finishes at the knee, lined with black crepe. It fastens at the side of the waist with a hidden tonal zip and hook-and-eye clasp. It has in-seam pockets on the hips. The skirt has a slit at the back for ease of movement. The jacket is single breasted and has a narrow top lapel and much wider bottom lapel, as was the fashion at the time. It fastens at the front with a large pearlescent button. The sleeves are slim and are split, secured with three small pearlescent buttons. There are three pockets on the front of the jacket; one is a faux welt pocket at the bust and two flat pockets sit at the waist. It is lined with black crepe throughout and, inside the left of the jacket, there is a large tonal embroidery of the iconic “YSL” intertwined logo.

This highly wearable skirt and jacket are in excellent vintage condition and look barely worn. Made in France, they are labelled a French size 34, UK 6 or US 2 but please check our measurements below as it just might work if you are a touch bigger. Our model's sizes are: Bust: 33" (84cm), Waist: 26" (66cm), Hips: 34" (86cm) and Height: 5' 7" (170cm) and she's a size UK 6-8, US 2-4. This suit fit her perfectly. The outer fabric is 100% Wool and the lining is 100% Cupro. The fabric has no stretch.

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
