1990s Yves Saint Laurent Blue Chenille Skirt Suit with Clover Buttons
This early 1990s Yves Saint Laurent skirt suit is comprised of a collarless jacket and pencil skirt tailored from deep blue chenille velvet, its textured surface creating a softly flecked effect. The jacket has long, slim sleeves which balance the defined waist, while angular welt pockets emphasise the jacket’s curved silhouette. The front fastens with black plastic buttons engraved with four-leaf clovers. The coordinating skirt sits high on the waist and is cut to a mini length. It fastens at the left hip with a button tab and concealed black zip. Both pieces are lined in black satin and can be worn together or styled separately.
In very good to excellent vintage condition. There are small areas of very light rubbing to the chenille on the undersides of the sleeve cuffs and around the pockets. These are barely noticeable unless inspecting very closely. Labelled a French size 34, approximately equivalent to a UK 6 or US 0-2. There are no composition labels, so the exact fibre content is unconfirmed and the fabric has no stretch. Our model, who is 5'7" wears this size and reported a great fit - it had no room to spare.
Notes on Designer: Yves Saint Laurent was one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century, bringing the precision of masculine tailoring to women’s wardrobes without sacrificing glamour. Following his early career at Christian Dior, he established his own house in 1961, developing a distinctive style characterised by strong silhouettes, rich colour and contrasting textures. His introduction of Le Smoking in 1966 challenged the conventions of women’s evening dress, while his Rive Gauche line helped establish ready-to-wear as a serious counterpart to haute couture. His work balanced sharp tailoring with a more romantic sensibility, moving between pared-back trouser suits and richly embellished eveningwear. Catherine Deneuve, Betty Catroux and Loulou de La Falaise were among his best-known clients and muses.

What is archival fashion?
Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.
How is archival fashion different from vintage?
While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
