2003 Tom Ford for Gucci Runway Pink Strapless Corset Maxi Dress

£5,750.00

This memorable dress was worn by supermodel Natalia Vodianova on the runway for Gucci’s Fall 2003 collection, designed by Tom Ford (look 39/45). True to form, this collection was incredibly sensuous and dresses clung to the body, with Vogue writing, “Ford, after all, bases Gucci’s entire brand proposition on finding new ways of upping the ante on sex season after season.”

Tailored from blended stretch silk in a dusky pink hue that ran throughout the collection, it has a corseted top with a basque waist. The corset is of complex construction and detailed with elaborately woven panels of silk-satin, pleated and stitched into place with tonal thread to create diagonal stripes around the body. In contrast, smooth silk-satin trims the boning on the outside and it is fully lined inside with pink silk. The basque waist is banded at the front with gold-toned metal eyelets whilst the corset closes at the left side of the back with exposed brass hook-and-eyes. The dress has a single asymmetric silk-satin strap which loops around the neck at an angle. The skirt is tailored from the same silk and hugs the hips, before falling to floor-length with a slight kick-flare at the bottom; it is lined with a sheer lilac chiffon slip. The dress fastens under the arm with a hidden tonal zip and hook-and-eye.

This dress is in very good archival vintage condition with the following to note: the necktie, which can seen on the runway and is separate from the dress, was either not sold with the dress or has been used to replace the strap. The skirt appears to have been lined later in a pale lilac chiffon and this can be removed if desired. There are some faint water marks around the bottom edge of the dress which are difficult to spot and blend in well with the pink. It is labelled a size Italian 38, UK 6 or US 0-2 and will not fit any bigger than a true sample size. The fabric composition is 68% Silk, 25% Nylon, 7% Elastane.

What is archival fashion?

Archival fashion refers to historically significant designer garments preserved for their cultural, aesthetic, or technical importance. At Circa, archival fashion includes couture archive pieces, runway garments, early designer work, and museum-quality vintage that document the evolution of fashion history.

How is archival fashion different from vintage?

While vintage typically describes clothing over 20 years old, archival vintage is selected for its rarity, provenance, and relevance to a designer’s archive or fashion history. Circa specialises in archival pieces rather than general vintage.
