PRODUCT DETAILS
This exquisite, original 1930s hand crochet dress in ivory cream is likely of US origin and made in the Irish tradition. It is therefore unlabelled. It would make an enchanting choice for vintage bridal wear. The dress is ankle length with a curved V neckline and quarter length sleeves. The stitching is varied on the sleeves hem and neckline into more elaborate floral designs and knots which range in density so that some areas such as the line of the neck over the bust, and the lower hem are more revealing. The variation of stitches on the hem are arranged into tiers and flares slightly from the calf. This exquisite piece is in exceptional vintage condition. There are no fastenings or lining, so a slip will be required. Would fit a range of sizes from US size 6-10, UK 10-14.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Crochet first came to Ireland in the 1700s, developed by Ursuline nuns who had learned the technique in France, where it was popular as a shortcut for making Venetian point needle lace. Characterised by raised edges and fine mesh background, this technique was many times faster than the traditional needle lace and required simple, readily available tools.
